Create a Cheerful American Flag Welcome!

American Flag Decor

Hello, America!  Let your Stars and Stripes fly free.  After all, it’s your birthday tomorrow!  I found a treasure of an American flag at an estate sale recently.  It is pre-1960’s (before Alaska and Hawaii were added to the union) so it only has 48 stars.  It is woven linen and hand-stitched – I love its character, patina and history.  I thought I would make a welcoming hallway vignette to celebrate the holiday and display the flag!

The flag takes center stage as a backdrop for my other Americana treasures.  An old camera , sunglasses, and a guide book can be picked up on the way out the door for summertime adventures.  Tennis rackets stand ready and beach towels in a French market basket are packed for fun at the beach!

My faux olive basket from Walmart (more to come on those!), with a fresh new fern and fun ampersand pillow, finish the look atop the most American piece of furniture – a black Windsor bench.

Are you decorating for July 4?  I’d love to hear/see what you’ve done.

DIY Metal Letter Wall Art

Metal Letter Wall Art - Cleveland

Today I wanted to share a little piece of “artwork” I created with industrial-looking tin letters I found at Hobby Lobby.  My inspiration was artwork by a great Cleveland artist, Garrett Weider.  He does small Cleveland skyline paintings and larger block letter paintings that you can buy from local coffee shops, the Cle Clothing Co or his Etsy site.

I spotted these industrial looking letters at Hobby Lobby, got them on sale (50% off!), and voila – I had a nice piece for the wall with a shout out to Garrett.  I wanted to fully spell “Cleveland”, which is 9 letters.  I thought the full word would work nicely in a 3×3 vignette.  The hubby helped me of course and used Kraft paper to create a template for the wall, spacing each letter how we wanted and then measuring and marking where the holes would need to be.  Then it was just a matter of holding the paper up to the wall, putting in nails, and hanging the letters.

I chose to hang this artwork on my stair landing and couldn’t be happier with the result.  When you come into the house, this is the main piece that beckons from the stairs and says “hey, these people are from Cleveland, and they like a little industrial edge”.  Ha!  I’m not sure it exactly says that, but I’ll have to interview my guests.

Have you done any letter art?  I’d love to hear about your projects.

Bliss

Follow Your Bliss

“When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s ananda“, sang Mary Pat Saturday morning at Namaste Yoga Studio.  “There is no need for music, we will make our own music in our minds.”, she said with a hearty laugh and proceeded to explain that “ananda” is akin to bliss and there are many forms it can take.

When I think of bliss I first think of happiness, but somehow the feeling of bliss goes beyond pure happiness.  For me it conjures thoughts of an enlightened state of happiness, peace, and joy.  That somehow when you achieve bliss, you’ve achieved everything.  You are complete.  You are whole.  Some say that bliss is a state of “extreme happiness”.  But I would prefer a less “extreme” adjective, perhaps bliss is more “supreme happiness” or, even better, “serene happiness”.

The quote I chose to feature for this post, “Follow your bliss…”, I have always thought was just about career or purpose in life.  But with that yoga class, I realize that it could be more than that.  Can I follow bliss in a yoga class and become more open?  Can I follow bliss by listening to music and feeling more emotions?  Can I follow bliss by traveling, seeing other cultures and in turn valuing all humankind more?  Absolutely!  It applies to everything we do.

“Respond to every call that excites your spirit.”  – Rumi

There is a yoga studio in Cleveland called “Inner Bliss” – how great is that!  This weekend they sponsored a wonderful event at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame called “Believe in CLE”.  It is essentially an outdoor yoga class and community gathering for hundreds of people and done so on a perfect summer night.  I wasn’t able to attend but I was truly there in spirit, and the sense of community I witnessed through their photos and social media posts connected me to the bliss they achieved that night.

I started this blog to explore my own joy of living (or “joie de vivre” as I love to hear and say in French) and those things that bring me to a state of happiness and bliss.  I know that what is joy to me may not be joy to others, but I believe it is possible for everyone to achieve.  I am so grateful for where I am and what I have that have allowed me to be open to these experiences.  I hope that you, too, will keep following your bliss and achieve a serene, pure, supreme, and complete happiness that is yours alone.

Easy Tuna Mango Avocado Salad

Easy Tuna Mango Avocado Salad

This is probably one of my favorite, easiest go-to summertime salad recipes – how’s that for a little description!  And I was inspired to make this after having had a similar variation at the Commodore restaurant in Key West this March.  There’s just something about these flavors that evokes thoughts of summertime by the ocean, warm breeze in the air, palm trees swaying lazily…and…my stomach’s growling…

What can I make that’s quick, easy and gets me back outside lickety split?  A salad definitely because it’s so warm out, hmm ok, but I need a little more to it than that!  Enter tuna, mango, avocado.  The tuna you can buy fresh or frozen to always have on hand (I can find it in individual frozen packs at my favorite grocery, Heinen’s).  Next, select a ripe mango and avocado and a nice size bunch of romaine lettuce.  You’ll also need some good quality balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

Sprinkle the thawed tuna on both sides with Montreal seasoning and rub or pat it in to the flesh.  Montreal what, you say?  If you have not had Montreal seasoning you should get some; it will be in your grocer’s spice aisle.  It is the best, all around grilling seasoning that combines just the right amount of flavor with kick that spices up any old meat or vegetable.  I started using it on beef and found it tasted just as delicious on fish, chicken, and vegetables.  Maybe it’s my Canadian heritage kicking in?  It really is from Montreal in Quebec, Canada and was originally used as a pickling spice on smoked meats.  You just need it on your tuna!  Grill the tuna steaks to your level of done (I like mine medium well) and let rest.

Cut up the avocado and mango.  If you’ve never cut these up before they can be a little tricky. I like to slice avocado in half lengthwise with a large knife (around the stone), pull out the stone (give it a good whack with your knife and lift out), and then scoop out the flesh with a spoon.  A mango is a little trickier as the stone inside is a flat large one.  You really have to turn the mango on its side and cut a slice off each side. For both, I then cut into smaller chunks for the salad.  Some day I’ll take a picture of that!

Chop the romaine and layer it on the plate.  Add the chopped avocado, mango, and grape tomatoes.  Slice the tuna steak and layer it on top of the salad.  Drizzle with a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Sprinkle fresh ground pepper.  Bon appetit!

World’s Greatest Pimm’s Cup

Pimm's Cup

Pimm's LiqueurThis weekend was the Summer Solstice, marking the first day of summer.  I always like to have friends over as it is (1) the anniversary of when we moved into this house and (2) how could you not want to celebrate summer!  And I think a wonderful way to welcome summer via cocktail is a Pimm’s Cup.  A Pimm’s what, you say?  Yes, I thought so, too.  I was introduced to this delicious summery drink by my English friend, Sarah.  The cocktail includes a liqueur popular in England but not as much in the U.S.  That’s because I didn’t know about it until a few years ago.  Now everyone will know about it, right?!

Pimm’s is a gin-based drink containing a “secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs”, first created by James Pimm in 1823.  Pimm served it in a small mug known as a “No. 1 Cup”, hence the full name – Pimm’s No. 1 Cup.  Pimm’s makes other brands based on other spirits – No. 2 Cup is Scotch whiskey, No. 3 Cup was brandy, etc.  But Pimm’s No. 1 Cup is what we want to use for our fun-time summertime drink.  It is dark in color, looks a little like tea, and tastes like a combo of citrus and spices.

Now I’ve had a so-called Pimm’s Cup in a few establishments and it just cannot compare to Sarah’s recipe.  That’s why it’s best made at home.  You can make a single drink or a pitcher for a party.  Either way it will be delicious and I guarantee the World’s Greatest Pimm’s Cup!

First we need our accoutrements (fancy French word I like to use for “stuff we want to put in this drink”).  I’m sure you could try different fruits and herbs, but she introduced it this way, so I like it this way – with strawberries, oranges, cucumbers, and fresh mint.

Pimm's Cup Ingredients

Next we need the mixing liquid to add to the Pimm’s.  Sarah uses Sprite or 7-Up (or any carbonated lemon-lime beverage, really – p.s. I tried this with Squirt and it was also delicious).  FYI, the English call lemon-lime soda “lemonade” so don’t be confused if you order it there.  In the U.S. we have our own variation of lemonade – it’s usually water, lemons, sugar (no carbonation) which I don’t think would taste as good.  Also, some don’t like the sweetness that lemon-lime soda provides and opt to use tonic or club soda.  I likah the sweet.  I have not tried a “Pimm’s Royal Cup”, which I believe is a variation using champagne (oohlala!).

Pimm's Cup

Now we are ready to mix.  Cutup the fixin’s (ok now I’m from the South!) and add to the glass of choice, which I think should be a nice-sized stemmed or stemless goblet.  Muddle the fruit a little with a spoon and add some ice.  Pour in 1/3 Pimm’s to 2/3 7-Up.  Stir a little and serve!

Et voila or Cheerio Cheers, I guess I should say to be a little more English?!  (p.s. I don’t think they really say that, it just sounds fun with the accent).  Ooh, and you know what’s really fun is to serve this on July 4 in America.  Boldly declare your independence from the crown but your dependence on their liqueur.  Viva la Brittania!  Ok, I’ll stop mixing French and English now.  🙂  Enjoy!
